OpenAI Brings ChatGPT Health to all US Adult Users

AI is poised to play an even bigger role in healthcare conversations.

After rolling out a health-focused version of ChatGPT in a separate space for a test group earlier this year, OpenAI has embedded the feature into the standard ChatGPT portal and expanded access to all adult users in the U.S.

The new feature allows users to upload and connect health information to ChatGPT, spanning medical records, patient portals and apps like Apple Health. The large language model (LLM) will then be able to draw on that information in conversations relating to health concerns, upcoming appointments, recent test results and more.

According to OpenAI’s launch announcement last week, the feature is meant to help people both consolidate their health information in one place and make better sense of it.

Though the AI tool has been shown in multiple studies to regularly provide inaccurate answers to health questions—and its maker is currently being sued for allegedly offering a user “extremely dangerous medical recommendations”—the company said it is continuing to refine the technology, with its latest GPT-5.6 Sol model offering “even stronger performance on more complex questions.”

On the privacy front, the shared data and health-related conversations about it “are not used to train our foundation models or target ads,” according to the announcement.

The launch of ChatGPT Health comes just a few months after OpenAI introduced ChatGPT for Clinicians, a version of its AI specifically designed to support verified healthcare professionals in tasks like documentation, research and clinical decision-making.

solli’s Final Thoughts

Research has shown that patients are increasingly bringing information gathered from LLMs like ChatGPT to their doctors’ appointments to discuss. One could reasonably predict that OpenAI’s latest launch will further accelerate that practice by integrating individuals’ health data into its answers to medical queries, enabling it to offer potentially more personalized, relevant guidance.

The new ChatGPT feature is therefore all but guaranteed to embed AI even more deeply into the healthcare ecosystem and patient-provider conversations. Pharma media must continue adapting to that new reality and the opportunities it presents.

For one, as patients turn more and more to AI tools for health information, brands can play a role in boosting the accuracy and relevance of that information by ensuring their content is optimized for AI search: compliant, evidence-backed and easily surfaced and summarized by tools like ChatGPT.

For another, the launch raises the question of whether health and pharma companies will soon be able to advertise directly within ChatGPT. OpenAI began piloting ads earlier this year, and while ads are currently “not eligible to appear near sensitive or regulated topics like health, mental health or politics,” per the company, the door isn’t fully closed. OpenAI said it plans to “expand responsibly as safeguards mature,” though guardrails will remain in place “to prevent narrow ads targeting.”

If (and when) health and pharma brands are able to buy space within the ChatGPT environment, transparency, compliance and accuracy will remain keys to success as ads are placed next to straightforward, high-intent conversations about sensitive health information.
